Three key factors that decide your Google AdSense earnings

Do you know the three key factors that decide your Google AdSense earnings?

If not, then you should use the Revenue Calculator on the Google AdSense website. You will realise that the three key factors that decide your potential annual revenue are: content category, that is the kind of content that you publish (finance, real estate, news etc.), the geographical region from where your website gets its traffic, and the average monthly page views.

Google, of course cautions you to “bear in mind that this value is only an estimate.” But even this estimate is an eye opener.

For purpose of estimating your website’s AdSense revenue, Google has divided the world into four regions: Asia and Pacific Countries, Europe, Middle East and Africa, North America and South America.

The number of content categories are organised under 24 heads that broadly cover almost every form of content.

Once you define your content category and the geographical region you can use the Revenue Calculator’s slider to enter the monthly page views your website gets. This range extends from 50,000 to 1 crore monthly page views.

Once you have entered all the three variables, the Revenue Calculator will estimate your annual income from Google Ad Sense ads.

What can an Indian Publisher earn from Google Ad Sense

So, what can an Indian publisher expect to earn from Google AdSense if his website’s average monthly page views are 50,000?

This is when you realise that content is indeed king. The website that focuses on finance can expect to earn the highest annual revenue – $15,012 — from Google AdSense. Home and Garden comes next. It can expect to earn an estimated $11,028 annually. Real Estate websites are third with an estimated annual earning of $10,002.

The bottom of the ladder is made by Books and Literature. Their publishers can expect to earn $1,296 annually. Interestingly, the second last content category is News. The annual earnings of News website publishers as calculated by Google Revenue Calculator is $2,010 – almost one-seventh of a financial website’s earnings.

The following table gives the estimated Google Ad Sense earnings for different kinds of content that an Indian publisher can expect (the table has been generated for Asia Pacific countries with an average monthly page views of 50,000):

A comparative chart of Google Ad Sense earnings in the four regions throws up some interesting insights:

  • The content categories where the estimated earnings of websites based in North America are the highest number 15
  • The content categories where the estimated earnings of websites based in Asia and Pacific are the highest in the world number nine
  • Estimated earnings of websites based in South America and Europe, Middle East and Africa are much less as compared to earnings of websites based in North America and Asian and Pacific countries

The following chart lists the potential annual Google AdSense earnings of all content categories with average monthly page views across the four geographical regions:

The Google Revenue Calculator does not include the choice of Google AdSense ads, and their placement. Of course, as a publisher you have the choice of going for Auto placement. This is what Google recommends. But then the display may detract the visual appeal of your website. It’s a difficult call. Should you go for revenue? Or should you provide for an easier, cleaner reading experience for your website users? It is something you can learn only from experience.

Google AdSense revenue share

Google is extremely generous in sharing AdSense revenue. For AdSense ads run on their websites, Publishers are paid a handsome 68% of the ad revenue. Google keeps the remaining one-third. But even this one-third revenue adds up to millions of dollars every year given the fact that 2 million publishers run Google AdSense ads on their websites.

Publishers can also earn from Search ads. However, the revenue share in this case is less. Publishers who run the Google AdSense code for search receive 51% of all revenue generated from searches that happen on their websites. The advantage is that publishers need not spend money on setting up a search box. They can simply insert the Google search code, and earn some money in the process.

Google is, however, is very cagey in disclosing revenue share arising from its other Ad Sense products especially You Tube ads. Says Google “We don’t disclose the revenue share for other AdSense products …. due to different costs of developing and supporting these products.”

Now that you know how much you can earn by Google AdSense ads it is time to sign up. The best part is that Google does not charge anything for providing you with the AdSense code.
