# Query: Can AI translate news reports from English to Hindi that are of a publishable quality?
#Background: The biggest drudgery on any language news desk is the task of translating news reports from English into Indian languages. It is time consuming, and requires excellent translation skills.
The desk editors, while translating the reports, must ensure that the translated version retains the spirit of the original story and can be easily understood by the readers. They also have to make sure that the facts remain unchanged.
The challenge is especially high in medium and small newspapers where almost 90 per cent of the news reports are sourced from English-language news services such as PTI, UNI, IANS, Reuters, AP, and AFP.
Considerable translation work is required in language newspapers that have editions in English, and all language desks are expected to translate news reports written in English.

Four different prompts were created to study the outcome.

My Findings:
- Each prompt produced a different result, and once again established the importance of prompts in obtaining the desired results.
- The closest translation happened when AI was asked to translate the news report “in an exact manner without missing facts” (Prompt 2). The translation was very close to the original report. However, the readability was low because AI chose words that were hard to understand. They were not in common man’s Hindi. Also, the sentence construction was a little dense.
- The translation that was most newsworthy was the one where AI was asked to translate from English to Hindi without missing any facts (Prompt 3). The language was easy to understand, and all major points were covered.
- AI’s response was very different when it was given a straight command – to translate from English to Hindi (Prompt 1). There were no instructions to cover all facts or to be exact in translation. AI skipped several facts as it translated the story. It also did one more interesting thing. It summarised the story in Hindi with a summary in English at the end of each paragraph. The translation was not bad but was incomplete.
- The translation that needed most reworking was the one where AI was asked to use a conversational tone (Prompt 4). AI chose a style that was light and flippant, a style that may not find favour on most news desks.
# Bottomline: Gemini AI can be relied upon to reduce drudgery and improve productivity. The Hindi news desks can take the support of AI to translate reports from English to Hindi. They will save considerable time as the translation is instant. The translated report will certainly need one careful manual check before it is cleared for printing.
