The media brings the world to you. It informs you, educates you, and works as your eyes and ears. Sometimes, you are uncomfortable at the way media presents facts. You wonder if media has become bigger than warranted.

A common charge is that the media invades an individual’s privacy. It sometimes damns individuals and organisations, and destroys their reputations – in the name of news. The victims consider the media reports as nothing short of a witch-hunt.

This does not mean that there are no checks and balances. Journalists will tell you how hard they work to get facts. They are right. But there are aberrations too.

The aberrations worry everyone, both within and outside the media. Several journalists have set up watchdog organisations that put media reporting and practices under the lens. They monitor, analyse and comment on the way Indian media reports news.

Indian editors, anchors and journalists may not like these media on media sites; but they perform a great, and useful, role.
