How to get your site indexed by search engines

search engine tipsIt is very easy to set up a website. But how do you bring it to the notice of search engines? There are 4.5 billion websites, and the chances of your site being indexed by search engines are bleak.

Here are five ways to get your site crawled and indexed by important search engines:

1. Focus on the Big Three:
There are hundreds of search engines on the net. But the ones that matter are Google, Bing and Yahoo! These search engines power more than 95% of searches on the net. So, in Phase I focus all your attention on the Big Three. Once your sites starts figuring on the Big Three, you can turn your attention to the smaller search engines.

2. Submit your site:
All major search engines have a site submission link. This link is generally located on the home page of search engines. Enter the web address of your site correctly, and submit it for indexing. This is the best way of making the search engines become aware of your site.

3. Don’t over submit:
You should never make the mistake of submitting your site repeatedly to a search engine. A search engine, depending upon its size, takes six to eight weeks to respond to site indexing request. Repeated submissions don’t improve the chances of your site getting crawled. Instead, you run the risk of getting your site blacklisted if you badger search engines like Google, Yahoo! Or Bing with repeated requests.

The best way to find out if your site has been indexed is to search for your site by entering its full web address like www.easymedia.in. Submit your site again if the search results don’t show your site’s name after eight weeks.

4. Get incoming links:
Another way of getting your site noticed by search engines is to get incoming links from already existing sites. The search engine spiders will notice these links, and travel along them to reach your site. The question is how do you get incoming links.

The best way is to seek reciprocal links, especially from sites whose content is similar to yours. The chances are that one or two site administrators may agree if they like your content.

However, be careful in seeking reciprocal links. Never make the mistake of getting links from link farms. You may end up being blacklisted by search engines like Google, Yahoo! Or Bing.

5. Make your site search engine friendly:
You must understand that search engine spiders can’t see images or flash content like the way we do. They can only read text or HTML code. If your site is full of images or Flash content then the spiders will not find any content to index.

You should also have a well designed site map. This makes it easy for search engine spiders to index your site properly.
