3-point Twitter strategy for business

twitter strategyTwitter is a great place to mine information, to feel customer pulse, to listen to what your business rivals are doing and saying. You can do all this, and improve your customer interaction and customer base, if you have the right Twitter strategy.

Your Twitter strategy should have three key elements:

1. Create engagement
No Twitter strategy can succeed unless it addresses the key issue of engagement. You must connect with your customers, and engage them in conversation. You can do this by adopting the following strategy:

a. Include your company name in Twitter handle: Your Twitter handle, or your Twitter name, must include your company name. If your company name is not available then suffix your city/country name to your company name. It is important that Twitter users should identify your company from the company handle. For instance, my blog name Easy Media was taken by another Twitter user. I suffixed India to Easy Media to create the following Twitter handle: easymediaindia. You can do the same.

b. Use hashtags: Every company tweet must use two hashtags – one before your Twitter handle and the other before the product/service about which you are tweeting. The hashtag then becomes the glue that joins all your company tweets. You, as well as your customers, can now track your company tweets.

c. Post tweets with @mentions: Prefix @mention in your tweets and then type the public name/user name of the individual. Your customers will see your tweet.

d. Use Summary card: The summary card allows you to provide more information about your products/services. It also provides you the advantage of posting photographs and video.

2. Get followers
An important component of your Twitter strategy must be to get followers. You can do so by adopting the following practices:

a. Post regular updates: A company that posts tweets sparingly is unlikely to build a large following. You have to post tweets regularly to generate interest in your products/services. The customers will start following you only if they see fresh and relevant content.

b. Share information: Curate content. Share any news report/article that is of interest to your customers. For instance, if your company is into heart remedies, then share articles that provide information about heart ailments and remedies.

c. Retweet good tweets: Your team must retweet good tweets. Your followers will appreciate this because you are feeding them with tweets of their interest.

3. Mix your tweets
You should never make the mistake of talking about your company alone. Instead, your Twitter strategy should be more broad-based. You must mix tweets. This means that you should have tweets about your company, tweets with @mentions, tweets that share information from other sources and retweets.

Such a Twitter strategy will increase your followers and take your content to more customers.
